6 Ways to Successfully Navigate Change in Your Life

6 Ways to Successfully
Navigate Change in Your Life

Lisa Puzo Strickland

Change is an innate part of our existence. It empowers our evolution and propels us forward.

But, change can be awkward and painful given we humans much prefer to be comfortable. To avoid the pain of change, we often hang onto the familiar, the habitual, and therefore, hold ourselves back an optimum life.

When you finally bust through enough denial and self-doubt to reach the crucial I'm Ready! point, try these few bits of navigational wisdom to kick-start your journey:

1. Remember

Humans are rigged for change. It's in our DNA, so, you can be assured that you have successfully navigated change many times before throughout your entire existence.

Change is an integral part of the evolutionary process. Without it, nature gets stuck. Be confident that, just as the entire universe exhibits change every second of every day, you also can boldly go where you’re meant to grow.

2. Remove

Toss fear and doubt out the window, for unless they’re protecting you from danger, they are worthless emotions that stall and squash your progress. Fear clouds our judgement, and doubt veils our vision. Tap back into your intuitive, empowered self and refuse to let fear and doubt have any grip on your momentum

If you’re having trouble removing these nay-sayers from your conscious, try an old actor’s trick: repurpose negatively-heightened emotions by turning them into the very energy spurring your excitement.

3. Retreat

Counter-intuitive or not, sometimes stepping back is the quickest way to find your forward footing.

Change is foggy and confusing, so by seeking a different view we can more clearly see where we are now in relation to where we wish to be. Try envisioning your current status from above, a bird’s eye view in black and white with no emotions attached. This method can really clear your head. Retreating can also mean taking time to hear your thoughts, like when gardening or walking. Or you may prefer to literally retreat by taking a vacation to change your surroundings. Whatever the term retreat means to you, embrace it as a necessary part of the process for successful change.

4. Resist

Even if you are unsure of your direction, resist the urge to give up. Change can feel slow-coming, so resist making excuses and keep spinning those wheels.

Our internal compass works much like a GPS, or as I prefer to call it, our IGS, Intuitive Guidance System. We’re not going to be given every single direction along our Life’s Path all at once. Life is about taking one step, one turn, and one change at a time. We need only take that first step to be well on our way. And, then, a second step. Keep going. Resisting the temptation to stay in your comfort zone is essentially placing your trust in both Life and in yourself to take you to miraculous places.

5. Respond

Every change is a gift. It's an opportunity for you to become more aware of who you are today and who you are destined to be in the future. But, this forward momentum can be thwarted by a simple lack of appreciation.

The collective energy that connects us to each other and to every living thing is a thriving, powerful field that is fed by positive emanations, but can be disintegrated by negativity and ambivalence. Therefore, it is imperative throughout the entire process of change to continually and graciously respond with gratefulness

Gratefulness is one of nature’s most invigorating forces. It's the fuel in the Universe's engine. Be thankful for the lessons learned, opportunities presented, and the good that lies waiting. For by praising each step, you light your path and clarify your life ahead.

6. Revere

Lastly, it's time to celebrate you! Revere yourself for how far you've come. Pat yourself on the back for recognizing your knack for change and for mustering up the courage to forge ahead. And what about that past from which you so powerfully shifted? Also revere those people and things for having held a necessary place in your beautiful world.

You're doing great!
